TikTok Withdraws From The Program Permanently!

Recently, the European Commission announced that TikTok has promised to permanently withdraw the TikTok Lite rewards program from the EU market.

TikTok Lite was launched in France and Spain in April this year. The TikTok Lite rewards program allows users to earn points by completing certain tasks on the platform, such as watching videos, liking content, following creators, or inviting friends to join.

These points can be exchanged for rewards such as Amazon vouchers, PayPal gift cards, or TikTok coins. The program is mainly for users aged 18 and above whose devices have less than 2GB of memory, limited data connection, or only support 2G/3G network connection.

However, the European Commission is worried that the TikTok Lite reward mechanism may cause users to become addicted and affect the mental health of users, especially minors, so it filed a formal lawsuit against TikTok on April 22.

The EU believes that TikTok did not seriously assess the risks that the program may bring in advance, especially the risks related to platform addiction, and TikTok has not taken effective risk mitigation measures. In addition, the EU also pointed out that this is particularly worrying for children given that TikTok allegedly lacks an effective age verification mechanism.

After facing pressure from the European Union, TikTok promised to permanently withdraw the TikTok Lite reward program in the EU and not to launch any other plans to circumvent the withdrawal. Any violation of this commitment will immediately constitute a violation of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and may result in a fine. With this decision, the European Commission ended the case filed against TikTok in April, which was the first case settled under the EU Digital Services Act and the first time it accepted a commitment from a designated online platform.
