Shopee Responds to Rumors of Mass Layoffs

According to foreign media reports, Shopee Indonesia recently denied the news circulating on social media X that the company will carry out large-scale layoffs.
Radynal Nataprawira, head of public affairs at Shopee Indonesia, said that the company will not lay off employees, but will transfer customer service staff to Solo and Yogyakarta. "Some team members are willing to be transferred," Radynal said in a written statement last Saturday.
Regarding the policy, Radynal said that there were indeed several employees who were unwilling to relocate to the two cities, but he did not specify the specific number. He said that employees who refused to change their work location were not fired, but chose to resign.
"For team members who do not accept the change of work location, we will ensure that they receive support in accordance with their rights and applicable government regulations, as well as other support facilities such as insurance, in the next three months," he said.
Radynal explained that the transfer of employees to Yogyakarta and Solo has been Shopee's plan for the past year. This is based on the readiness of the city's facilities and the development of human resources. He claimed that this policy is Shopee's effort to create equal employment opportunities.
"Shopee has operational offices across multiple regions and hopes to contribute to the creation of a digital talent development ecosystem while providing employment opportunities in these regions," he said.
Shopee reportedly moved its employees to Yogyakarta and Solo to reduce the company's expenses on employee salaries. Tempo sent a written inquiry to Shopee Indonesia's Corporate Affairs Media Relations Department on the matter but has not yet received a response.
