Yesterday (April 9), Malaysian authorities said they had ordered Meta and TikTok to come up with plans to combat harmful content online amid a rise in offensive content on social media platforms.

The government notified more than 50,000 such cases to various social media platforms, including Meta's Facebook and TikTok, in the first three months of this year alone, the Communications and Multimedia Commission and the National Police said in a statement.

While they did not specify what was happening, authorities said they were particularly concerned about posts related to race, religion and royalty.

These topics are very sensitive in multiracial Malaysia.

The two tech companies attended a meeting chaired by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil on Monday and were told to step up monitoring efforts, including removing posts related to scams and illegal gambling.
