It is reported that recently, in response to sellers requiring consumers to provide unboxing videos before returning products for refunds, the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) issued a warning that this behavior is illegal and should be stopped immediately.
According to the report, the provision was alleged to be a deceptive, unfair and unreasonable sales practice that violates Republic Act No. 7394, the Consumer Code.
DTI spokesperson Amanda Nograles said in an interview with the media that "no returns and no exchanges" are expressly prohibited. If consumers find defects when purchasing goods, they have the right to request returns, replacements, or full refunds.
She also noted that consumers can choose to have the seller perform repairs. The DTI emphasized that this regulation is intended to protect the rights and interests of consumers and ensure that they enjoy legal rights during the shopping process. Such regulations constitute unreasonable restrictions on consumers and should be regarded as illegal sales practices.
